About Me
Wooden bridge, Frankenmuth, MI.
My name is Katy Jain. I grew up in Walled Lake, Michigan. I went to Walled Lake Western High School and graduated in the Top Twenty of my class in 1999. I went on to Michigan State University and graduated with honors in 2004 with a Bachelors Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science and a minor in History. In 2004 I completed my year long teaching internship at Fenton High School in Fenton, Michigan. I worked under a wonderfully supportive mentor named Grant Belinger. Mr. Belinger allowed me to take total control of his classes and I dived right into a full teaching schedule teaching Economics and Citizens and the Law in a block schedule.
After completing my teaching internship I was immediately hired by Redford Union Schools in 2005. When I was originally hired, I had a full teaching schedule at Pearson, the district's School of Choice Middle School and High School. My first year I taught six different preps: U.S. History, World History, Government, 7th Grade Social Studies, Economics, and Sociology. After my first year of teaching, I was laid off due to budget cuts and redistricting, but I was fortunate to be recalled to the Alternative Education Program. I have been teaching in the Alternative Ed program for the last six years. Along the way I became the program's School Improvement Team Leader and Testing Supervisor for the ACT/MME and MEAP tests. I was also responsible for scheduling students and writing the program's School Improvement Plan and EdYes! and SPR90 reports. I have loved getting to know the students and opening their eyes to new experiences, like our trip to the Henry Ford Museum shown in the pictures below. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, the Alternative Ed program was closed at the end of this school year and I have been laid off again.
I enrolled in the MAET program at MSU for multiple reasons. First of all, I was looking to improve myself and improve upon my teaching techniques and my technology integration. I also wanted to be able to share practical skills and strategies with my colleagues and School Improvement Team members and knew that MSU would continue to provide that same practical, yet research based knowledge. I also wanted to broaden my horizons and open myself up to the possibility of working outside of the classroom.
I currently live in Walled Lake, MI with my husband Mike and our two dogs, Piper and Belle. My husband is a police officer, which can be a very stressful and worrisome lifestyle. I am very proud of my husband and his job and I work hard to create a loving home and lasting memories to help combat the stresses of his career. We love to camp and explore the great state of Michigan. The last few summers we have been working towards my goal to see all of the lighthouses in Michigan. I also love to cook and bake. I am an avid Food Network fan and love to read food and recipe related blogs. Most of all, I am looking forward to finishing my Master's program and finding where this new road will lead me.
Below you will find a slide show of pictures that represent important events and hobbies in my life. The first three are pictures from a field trip to the Henry Ford Museum. The "With Liberty and Justice for All" exhibit was particularly moving for my students. We had some powerful moments looking at segregation artifacts and the Rosa Parks Bus. The next four are of my immediate family: my husband and our two dogs. I included pictures from our trip up the Lake Michigan coast to view lighthouses. My husband was practicing his photography skills and now we have wonderful memories saved in picture form. Finally, the last three pictures are of my baking creations. I love to bake to relieve stress. I bake every Sunday for a family dinner at my parents house. It helps us stay close as a family to get together every Sunday.
